Mountain View plot revealed and other conspiracies

Well, the UN is at it again. According to Secure Arkansas, it’s trying to take over Mountain View under the guise of the Arkansas Heritage Department, which proposed designating part of the town as an historic district.

I don’t know about you, but to me nothing screams UN takeover as much as the state Heritage Department, charged with preserving Arkansas’ history, trying to preserve a town’s history and heritage. According to Secure Arkansas, it’s all supposed to be a part of the nefarious Agenda 21 plot, the UN blueprint for world domination. What the UN wants with a few buildings in an Ozarks town where preservation of tradition is the main business is beyond me.

By the time you read this, either the deed will have been done, or Secure Arkansas will have saved Mountain View from UN oppression since its city council was to discuss the proposal Tuesday night. I suspect whatever the outcome, it will be business as usual in Mountain View for the foreseeable future.

It’s amazing how some people see vast conspiracies in every little thing that comes along. I mean, part of Mountain Home’s downtown area received an historic district designation and I have yet to see blue-helmeted troops or black helicopters swarming the square. There’s never been a shortage of conspiracy theorists, nor a shortage of people who readily accept what they’re selling, both literally and figuratively.

What’s even more astounding to me is how many people believe this stuff. The Internet makes it easy to spread such stories and fear, and there are a lot of people who take anything on the Internet at face value, no matter how ridiculous it is. According to whoever starts these things, there are FEMA death camps either open or being constructed, the IRS has stockpiled ammunition for its agents to control the population, police and National Guard troops are confiscating firearms from peaceful citizens, Homeland Security has acquired armored vehicles that can be armed to the teeth, and the federal government is coming to take us away.

Only one thing is missing from all this: Proof.

I guess I’ve lived too close to Missouri for too long because I want someone to show me where these FEMA camps are, show me the IRS ammo dumps, show me proof anyone anywhere in America is confiscating guns and show me the Homeland Security tanks and armored fighting vehicles. (I have seen a couple of stories about local police departments getting surplus armored vehicles from the military, although other than their being conversation pieces, the only reason the departments got them was because they were “free.”)

Think about it. First, show me one country the UN has taken over or controls. Do you think anything resembling government camps for citizens could be built anywhere in the United States without somebody learning about it or Fox News reporting it? Do you think the National Guard or any of the military could confiscate weapons without word being spread everywhere within minutes in this era of cellphones, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and 24/7 news (at least when it’s not enamored by a missing jetliner)?

As for the military taking part, or even acting against American citizens, that’s not likely to happen, either. From military and former military people I know, their oath is to the people and the Constitution of the United States, not the government. There would be mutinies within the ranks before the military ever moved against Americans.

All of this does make for good, speculative fiction. I have a couple of writer friends, W.R. Benton and J.A. Johnstone (protégé of William W. Johnstone), who have written books along the lines of these “what if” situations. Their stories are plausible and realistic and entertaining, and they’re presented as speculation of what might happen if the economy collapsed, if another nation or terrorists invaded America, or if a corrupt government took power — not as fact or prophecy.

Those conspiracy folks prey on fear, or try to generate fear that’s more imagined than real. Too often somewhere along the line you find out this is bait on a financial hook. You can learn all the secrets if you buy their book or DVD or CD, or attend their seminars. You can protect your wealth by investing in whatever it is they’re selling — gold, silver, horse apples.

People need to be more discerning in what they accept as fact. Just because somebody says the UN is trying to take over Mountain View, or the federal government is ready to take your guns and throw you in a concentration camp, doesn’t make it so. And if they’re willing to share what they know for a price, spend your money on a W.R. Benton or J.A. Johnstone novel instead; you’ll get more value and entertainment for your money that way.

  1. Well, I tend to agree with you, Sonny, since I'm W.R. Benton and J.A. Johnstone is a personal friend. One aspect of America that scares me is the number of people who take comments on social media as Gospel, without validating any source or even confirming the information. America has experienced hard times before, but we're a tough people. The problem, in my view, is we don't realize how tough we can be, and we'll bounce back every single time, if it's humanly possible.
